You are currently browsing the monthly archive for February 2012.

It’s that time again!  Time to fertilize your citrus trees!  It’s easy!  Go to the local hardware or home store, buy a citrus fertilizer.  Take it home and apply it as the instructions tell you to, then water it in.  Don’t forget that last part!  This is not a quick, 3 minute spritz.  This is a good, nice, long soak, with the hose on low for a nice LONG time, no less than an hour.  If the water is running off, then create a mound with the soil to help keep the water at the tree, without also letting the trunk sit in water.

The other February chore?  Time to prune your trees.  This is a chore to spend some time on, and more time looking than cutting.  First, get rid of branches that are obviously dead, or are rubbing against structures.  Then, look for branches that are rubbing against each other.  Now it’s time to do the more artistic pruning.  Stand back and really give your tree a good look, and from all angles.  Prune branches that will enhance the shape of the tree and create a balanced overall shape.  Don’t prune out more than 1/3rd total of the tree at any one time; too stressful on the tree!

Have you planted any vegetables yet?  Start thinking about what you want to eat in the coming months and then either get starts at a home store or if you’re here in Tucson, get seeds from the Pima County Library’s Seed Library!  They are heirloom seeds and organic.  Yummy, delicious and healthy plants!
